Antibacterial Activity of In Situ Generated Silver Nanoparticles in Hybrid Silica Films

Herein we present silver nanoparticles (AgNPs)-doped inorganic–organic hybrid silica films on glass and polypropylene substrates. A sol in alcoholic medium was prepared at room temperature using TEOS, GLYMO, APTES. Silver were generated situ within the sol. AgNPs-SiO2 film obtained by dip coating method following drying 80 °C. FTIR spectra shows several vibrational bands of network amine functionalization. AgNPs formation observed from XRD dried film. UV–Visible show sharp surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band centered 412 nm arising evenly distributed nanoparticle inside that supported morphological characterization. Both coated showed good antibacterial activity against E. coli bacterial strain forming a zone inhibition agar diffusion test. The efficiency for 72.5% 83.75%. This approach provides straight-forward solution to prepare coatings various substrates especially plastics, where low processing is necessary.
